For years, the common belief that Artificial sweeteners help with weight loss because they have a low- calorie count while retaining an intense sweetness, has been readily embraced by the public.
But when they say ‘Oh, Sweeteners are so healthy for you!’ some ask “Healthy Sweeteners- Really??”
Study researcher (The University of South Australia) Peter Clifton says “There has been a 200 per cent increase in LCS usage among children and a 54 per cent increase among adults in the past 20 years”.
Who doesn’t like the taste of sugar, right?
Brooke Alpert, author of The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger says “We used to think artificial sweeteners were the answer to everything. But they are not as virtuous as they’d like you to believe—they are serious chemicals that may have adverse effects on your health”.
A study, published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports found that in fact, it does the opposite.
People who Low Calorie Sweeteners (LCS) are more likely to gain weight.
This finding flies in the face of controlled clinical trials that showed LCS do lead to weight loss.
In fact, researchers warn that LCS may also increase the risk of type 2 Diabetes.
What Evidence do We Have?
“Consumers of artificial sweeteners do not reduce their overall intake of sugar. They use both sugar and low-calorie sweeteners and may psychologically feel they can indulge in their favourite foods,” Clifton (mentioned above) said.
5,158 adult US consumers of large quantities of artificial sweeteners gained more weight than non-users, over a 7- year period. Clinton refers to 13 studies that investigated the effects of Artificially Sweetened Beverages (ASB).
It found that it increased cardiovascular disease, strokes, dementia and the risk of death among older people.
The reason why was unclear.
“A better option than low-calorie sweeteners is to stick to a healthy diet, which includes plenty of whole grains, dairy, seafood, legumes, vegetables and fruits and plain water,” Clifton said.
Researchers have warned that a $2.2 billion industry exists supposedly, to help people lose weight through artificial sweeteners, yet it may be contributing to type 2 diabetes, weight loss and other deadly consequences.

In breastfeeding mothers who drank soda, the LCS was found in the milk they were giving their babies.
BLOOD SUGARS WILL STABILISE
Receptors in our brain are signalled when we take food in.
The brain signals the pancreas to produce insulin to deal with the food, sort it out and make it available for energy.
Artificial sugars may increase insulin resistance, where the cells fail to respond to the brain signal to produce insulin. This may lead to type 2 diabetes and have other serious consequences on our metabolic system.
LCS fool our brain chemistry and can increase our craving for sweets, starches and carbohydrates.
Mothers who drank LCS daily during pregnancy were twice as likely to give birth to infants who would be overweight by the time they were one year old, as opposed to those who did not use LCS

“There is good reason to believe that artificial sugars are causatively connected to obesity,” says Rother. “The belief that many artificial- sugar fans hold is ‘I saved myself some calories, so I will have dessert.’ It’s a compensation plus an overcompensation mentality.”
REDUCE YOUR INTAKE OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GNO)
