Multiple Sweetener Words on a Blue Background

‘Healthy Sweeteners’- Really??

For years, the common belief that Artificial sweeteners help with weight loss because they have a low- calorie count while retaining an intense sweetness, has been readily embraced by the public.
But when they say ‘Oh, Sweeteners are so healthy for you!’ some ask Healthy Sweeteners- Really??”
Study researcher (The University of South Australia) Peter Clifton says “There has been a 200 per cent increase in LCS usage among children and a 54 per cent increase among adults in the past 20 years”.
Who doesn’t like the taste of sugar, right?

The Sweet taste of…‘Sugar’?

Brooke Alpert, author of The Sugar Detox: Lose Weight, Feel Great, and Look Years Younger says “We used to think artificial sweeteners were the answer to everything. But they are not as virtuous as they’d like you to believe—they are serious chemicals that may have adverse effects on your health”.

A study, published in the journal Current Atherosclerosis Reports found that in fact, it does the opposite.
People who Low Calorie Sweeteners (LCS) are more likely to gain weight.
This finding flies in the face of controlled clinical trials that showed LCS do lead to weight loss.
In fact, researchers warn that LCS may also increase the risk of type 2 Diabetes.

What Evidence do We Have?

“Consumers of artificial sweeteners do not reduce their overall intake of sugar. They use both sugar and low-calorie sweeteners and may psychologically feel they can indulge in their favourite foods,” Clifton (mentioned above) said.

5,158 adult US consumers of large quantities of artificial sweeteners gained more weight than non-users, over a 7- year period. Clinton refers to 13 studies that investigated the effects of Artificially Sweetened Beverages (ASB).
It found that it increased cardiovascular disease, strokes, dementia and the risk of death among older people.
The reason why was unclear.
“A better option than low-calorie sweeteners is to stick to a healthy diet, which includes plenty of whole grains, dairy, seafood, legumes, vegetables and fruits and plain water,” Clifton said.

Healthy Yoghurt and Fruit

Researchers have warned that a $2.2 billion industry exists supposedly, to help people lose weight through artificial sweeteners, yet it may be contributing to type 2 diabetes, weight loss and other deadly consequences.

6 REASONS to Quit Using Low Calorie Sweeteners (LCS)

Quit Using Low Calorie Sweeteners- WHY?

GET YOUR TASTE BUDS BACK

LCS are made with levels of sweetness exceeding that of sugar, naturally sweet fruits and vegetables. Manufacturers go overboard to create high levels of Sweeeeet.
The downside is that the natural sweetness of fruit and vegetables becomes…bland.
We develop an unnatural desire for sweetness that can only be satisfied with LCS.
Once you give up LCS, your taste buds can reset.

YOUR GUT HEALTH WILL IMPROVE

A Rack of sugar coated donuts and sweets

Kristina Rother, MD specialises in the area of gut health.
She says “Artificial sweeteners block the growth of certain bacteria in the gut” .
A study considering this, found that mice fed on LCS gained more weight because the bacteria in the gut had morphed and become better at taking the energy from food and turning it into fat.
Researchers believe this could happen in the human gut.
In breastfeeding mothers who drank soda, the LCS was found in the milk they were giving their babies.

BLOOD SUGARS WILL STABILISE

Receptors in our brain are signalled when we take food in.
The brain signals the pancreas to produce insulin to deal with the food, sort it out and make it available for energy.
Artificial sugars may increase insulin resistance, where the cells fail to respond to the brain signal to produce insulin. This may lead to type 2 diabetes and have other serious consequences on our metabolic system.

LOSE WEIGHT

LCS fool our brain chemistry and can increase our craving for sweets, starches and carbohydrates.
Mothers who drank LCS daily during pregnancy were twice as likely to give birth to infants who would be overweight by the time they were one year old, as opposed to those who did not use LCS
(JAMA Pediatrics Study)

“There is good reason to believe that artificial sugars are causatively connected to obesity,” says Rother. “The belief that many artificial- sugar fans hold is ‘I saved myself some calories, so I will have dessert.’ It’s a compensation plus an overcompensation mentality.”

REDUCE YOUR INTAKE OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS (GNO)

It’s obvious but easily undetected.
GNO in processed foods are everywhere.
LCS are made of corn, sugar beet or soy products. These are the three Main GNO crops commercially produced by genetic engineering in the United States.

CONCLUSION

That alone is reason to be cautious and have concerns about your health and the long- term effects LCS products could have on your body.
When you decide to STOP using LCS, you will still have a craving for sugar.
Consume real sugar. Stay off the fake sugar LCS that may cause problems for you.
Make sugar a treat.
Treating it as such will enable you to regulate it with better food choices.
Eat fresh and healthy, unprocessed foods that will most likely contain no LCS.

The result will be a healthier and cleaner body, both inside and out.

  2. Hello. Thanks a lot for sharing this article with us about healthy sweeteners.

For me this post is very useful and informative. I agree with you that we must be cautious and have consensus about our health and the long term effect of LCS products. We really need to consume real sugar because sugar in commerce can cause us to have major health problems, heart disease, diabetes, and more.
I like that you recommend that we should eat fresh and healthy, unprocessed foods of all types that do not contain LCS.
Hope to see more article like this well explained and useful.

    1. I agree, we should eat fresh, healthy, unprocessed foods regularly but for some, it’s unaffordable, for others it’s unpalatable and for others, it takes too long in the preparing. The focus first needs to be on educating the mind, then, preserving a good measure of Quality Life. LCS (and their attributed long term effects) will no longer be a problem. Thank you for your comments.

    2. Thank you Nimrodngy, for your thoughts. The disturbing thing I found was the amount of LCS in everyday items, like bread. I grew up in New Zealand in the 1960s’ and we got leftover grain from the mill for pennys. That’s what my old grandmother used to make bread from and it was no more than grain and water. It was heavy and filled the stomach with a slice. Today, bread is not like that. It’s likely one reason why the kids of the 2000s’ have a battle against obesity and other illnesses. Thanks again.

  3. We have personally been skeptical of anything unnatural. Low-Calorie Sweeteners may have some initial benefits. But over the long term, we believe that they are not sustainable and that there are irreversible side effects. It is always best to go the natural way.

Thank you for your informative and insightful article.

    1. I agree, the natural way is the better choice. Big business has sold the Lie that LCS are good for you and help you lose weight but the onus is on the user I believe, to review everything. Today, there is no excuse to remain uninformed, not with the information available to us. Education is Key. Thanks for your comment.
